2. Ramadan 2020

Date confirmed for UK as 24th April 2020. The beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan will be confirmed upon sighting of the new moon.

The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days.

The beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan will be confirmed upon the sighting of the new moon. It is now confirmed for London,UK, first day of Ramadan 2020 is Friday 24th April 2020.

The month of Ramadan is when the Qur’an was revealed; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong).

Due to the COVID-19 situation in UK, Muslim’s will be restricted during the month of Ramadan. Brothers and sisters should keep safe and follow the advice of the government.

Due to the lockdown in UK, we will be restricted in our movement so let’s make the most of the time we have at home.

Take advantage of this lockdown and use the time to recite the Qur’an. So much time has been given to us right now that we should use it to our advantage.

FACTS ABOUT RAMADAN

1. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar.
2. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
3. Beginning of Ramadan is dependent on the sighting of a crescent moon.
4. When the month of Ramadan arrives, the door of mercy are opened (Sahih Muslim).
5. Muslims cannot eat or drink during daylight hours.
6. On 27th Ramadan, the Qur’an, the sacred book of Islam, began to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw)
7. Fasting purifies the body & strengthens one’s faith.
8. This ramadan creates a bond with the poor.
9. It takes 33 Islamic years for Ramadan to return to the same place on the Gregorian Calendar.
10. In reality, during Ramadan, the demand for food increases.
11. There are 1.8 billion people (25% of the 7.5 billion people in the world 2018), whom fast during Ramadan.
12. There are 3.3 million Muslims in England as of 2018, which is 6% of the overall population of 55.16 million.
13. Fasting helps detoxify the body & improve mental health.
14. At the end of Ramadan, adults pay Zakat-ul-Fitr (approximately £5 per person), a contribution to support people in need.
15. After last day of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and greet each other with the greeting ‘Eid Mubarak’.
